Success in any endeavor requires us to fail. Overcoming the fear of failure and embracing the learning that we receive through these tough events is one major key to finding sustained success. I interview top athletes, successful business people, and people who have had an impact in my life. Find out how failure has been instrumental in the development of others and can be a tool for you.
In 2016 Shaquille Walker was a highly regarded college athlete who had the 3rd fastest 800meter track racing time in North America, heading into the Olympic trials in Eugene, OR. He was a shoo-in to qualify for the Olympics. Tragically, Shaquille was disqualified by a Nike runner who tripped him from behind as they came to the finish line in the semi-finals.
Rather than dig into the injustice of his disqualification, we delve into how he overcame the crushing feelings of despair that enveloped him after he lost his chance to fulfill his life-long dream of representing the United States in the Olympics.
Shaquille left the Olympic trials defeated but set a new World Record in an 800m road race two days after the loss of his Olympic dream. I love this interview and the perspective that Shaquille has about life. He shows incredible resilience and an astounding capacity to turn failure into triumph.
